Winter is coming so we thought we’d give you our top tips for creating a cosy home.

1. Create warmth through lighting.

A great way to create warmth is through lighting. The trick is to avoid buying daylight bulbs. Why you ask? Daylight bulbs emit a colour temperature in the range of 5,000 - 6,500 K which is a cooler tone in comparison to incandescent bulbs which emit a warm light in the range of 2,700 - 3,300 K.

There have been a number of studies on how the colour of light affects us. Bright cool lights during the day helps increase alertness and productivity. Warmer light exudes the feeling of warmth, calmness and relaxation.

2. Add texture.

Texture and fabrics can make your home appear more homely. Purchase cushion covers with different types of fabrics, place throws on your sofa or as an alternative, grab a thick knit blanket from your bedroom and lastly buy a textured rug.

Not only does adding texture make your home appear more homely but it also gives people the opportunity to use these items to get more comfortable. Who doesn't love to cuddle up on the sofa propped up with fluffy cushions, wrapped in a thick blanket to catch up with The Great British Bake Off?

4. Add ambience.

Using patterned wallpaper and warm tones of paint can make a space feel comfortable and relaxing.

Adding non-scented/scented candles can also create a snug atmosphere. The flames are known to soothe our soul – reducing stress and increasing self-awareness.

"It is scientifically proven that scented candles can play an essential role in the physiological effects of mood, stress, working capacity, and overall mental health," Chryssa Chalkia, an accredited clinical integrative psychotherapist and cognitive behavioural therapist.

Scented candles can also create a luxury feel and who doesn’t love hearing “it smells lovely in here, what is that scent?” Physiological benefits and a lovely smelling home? Sounds like a win-win situation to us.

It's easy to make your home more autumn/winter friendly. Cosiness is also a feeling and it can benefit an individual in numerous ways; increasing happiness, improving your self-care/self-love and most importantly it can make you even more house-proud.
